The Love Light takes place during the first World War, where Mary Pickford plays a young Italian woman, Angela Carlotti, who tends the local lighthouse and falls in love with a man she rescues from the sea. Her small village suffers devastating losses from the war, and when Angela realizes her lover is a German spy, the story takes a dramatic and unexpected turn. Angela must come to terms with her mistakes and set things right while finding her strength through such troubled times. Angela’s bravery and beautiful spirit bring love and light into the lives of those around her, giving hope for a brighter future after so much pain and heartache.
Mary’s dear friend, Frances Marion wrote and directed the film which features Frances’s husband, Fred Thomson, as Mary’s love interest. The Love Light was filmed in Carmel and Monterey, California which masqueraded as the Italian coastline and the stunning cinematography of Henry Cronjager and Charles Rosher, is revelatory today.

Reviews
– Pickford fans are going to like it because it shows their favorite at her best.” – New York Evening Mail, March 5th, 1921
– Just to know that Mary Pickford is to appear it evidence that the program will be exceptional, but in ‘The Love Light’, Mary Pickford has outdone herself, and gives a splendid production, once that will be thoroughly enjoyed by her admirers, and will bring new admirers.” – The Winnipeg Tribune, March 5th, 1921
– The Love Light’ gives Mary Pickford for the first time a strictly dramatic role. She rises to great heights, but doesn’t overdo it, and the picture as a whole reflects its own and the star’s excellence very brightly. The world’s sweetheart is known for the variety of roles she has enacted, but most of them have been tinged with a Mary which we all know and love. In ‘The Love Light’, one can’t help loving her, but instead of viewing her indulgently as an extremely clever child, one must admire Mary Pickford, the woman, consummate actress.” – The Honolulu Advertiser, January 10th, 1921
– The Love Light’ will fulfill all of the requirements, no matter what they might be, in the minds of all of her admirers and at the same time it introduces a new Mary Pickford to the world. For “The Love Light’ marks her first embarking into the emotional roles. She has sacrificed none of the charm which has ever been associated with her work, she incorporates the same bewitching mannerisms, radiates the same sweetness and cuteness – and more, she rises to emotional height hitherto unknown in any Mary Pickford production.” – Arizona Republic, January 26th, 1921
