I LOVE YOU ROSA

A superbly crafted, gentle love story with Jewish history and law at its core; as well as a beautiful period piece which shows life in 19th century Jerusalem. Under Levirate law, as outlined in the book of Deuteronomy, tradition requires an unmarried brother to marry the widow of his dead brother. Nissim’s brother has died and now Nissim has to follow the ancient ways and marry his brother’s spouse. However, he is only eleven, and the widow Rosa shoos him away. Years later, Nissim returns for Rosa, with marriage in mind. Their conflict and growing love resolve in a satisfying conclusion. Based on the life of director Mizrachi’s mother, the film addressed the implications of ancient religious tradition on modern life, particularly for women’s rights.
